LIONS ANNUAL TOY DRIVE

For many years, children served by local community programs, the Harlem Dowling Children’s Services, Mercy First and the Puerto Rican Family Institute, have been the recipients of the charity work of two special Santas: Flatlands Lion Gladys Pemberton  past Flatlands Lion Lion, Don Pemberton.

Their annual Toy and Clothing Drive program reaches out to hundreds of  children each year and has raised and distributed over $39,000 since 2009.*

A DAY AT THE RACES

One of the most enjoyable annual events is ” A Day at the Races”, held at the beautiful Belmont Park race track.  It is a time for the Lions, their families and friends to come together and share fun, fellowship and great food at Belmont’s elegant Garden Terrace Restaurant – and to hopefully pick a few winners!  Everyone leaves a winner, since the proceeds go to help the Flatlands Lions charities!

NURSING HOME CHRISTMAS VISIT

Each year the Lions join together to dispense some Holiday cheer at the Crown Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Brooklyn. Bearing gifts, singing Carols, and accompanied by Santa (who seems to develop a heavy Brooklyn accent on these visits!), the Lions give both seniors and staff reasons to smile.  In 2010, the Flatlands Leos joined for their first Christmas visit, and were an instant hit, and have been ever since!
